赤铁矿的集合体有各种形态,形成一些矿物亚种,即:

(1)镜铁矿 为具金属光泽的玫瑰花状或片状赤铁矿的集合体。

赤铁矿是自然界中分布很广的铁矿物之一,可形成于各种地质作用,但以热液作用、沉积作用和区域变质作用为主。在氧化带里,赤铁矿可由褐铁矿或纤铁矿、针铁矿经脱水作用形成。但也可以变成针铁矿和水赤铁矿等。在还原条件下,赤铁矿可转变为磁铁矿,称假象磁铁矿。
